Growing deforestation rates, rising carbon emissions and the littering of our earth’s land and oceans can all be connected to product packaging concerns. One way we address these issues is by reducing our packaging and focusing on actions to reuse and recycle, as outlined in our International Position Paper on Packaging.
This commitment includes a focus on recyclability, reduction and fiber sourcing. All fiber-based primary packaging components for our core range products are sourced from certified responsibly managed forests or contain 70% recycled content.
We have committed to the following sustainable packaging goals for all of our ALDI-exclusive products:
- By 2025, 100% of ALDI-exclusive products, including plastic packaging, will have reusable, recyclable or compostable packaging.
- By 2025, packaging material of all ALDI-exclusive products will be reduced by at least 15%.
- By 2025, plastic packaging will use 20% post-consumer recycled (PCR) content.
- We will guide continuous improvement of product packaging by internal expertise and external evaluations.
ALDI is also a proud member of the Sustainable Packaging Coalition (SPC). The Sustainable Packaging Coalition is a membership-based collaborative led by an independent non-profit that believes in the power of industry to make packaging more sustainable. Using an objective life-cycle-based approach, the SPC works in a constructive atmosphere to provide thought leadership and bring SPC members together to strengthen and advance the business case for more sustainable packaging.
Additionally, we've partnered with How2Recycle® to feature How2Recycle labels on our ALDI-exclusive product packaging for everyday food and non-food items to increase recycling rates. These labels provide clear instructions regarding recyclability for each packaging component.
ALDI U.S. is a founding activator of the U.S. Plastics Pact, a collaborative, solutions-driven initiative aimed at creating a path towards a circular economy for plastics in the United States by 2025. The first North American Pact of its kind, the U.S. Plastics Pact is a collaboration led by The Recycling Partnership, World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and Ellen MacArthur Foundation and sets a strategy to create scalable solutions across sectors in an effort to drive significant change.
ALDI supported the development of the FMI Sustainable Packaging Playbook. This guide was created to assist retailers and suppliers in better understanding ways to design sustainable packaging, including recyclability.
