Energy and Climate
Monitoring energy consumption is a priority, and we know many factors, like lighting, refrigeration and transportation, can impact the environment. We measure our carbon footprint, which includes emissions from corporate offices, regional warehouses and stores, as well as the movement of product and miles driven as part of our business operations. We’re always working to reduce our energy consumption and find renewable solutions.
We set a goal to improve energy efficiency by 10 percent by 2015, based on 2008’s daily average kWh/square foot. By 2014, we had not only met our goal but doubled it, reducing our electricity consumption by 20 percent. We’re continuing to increase our energy efficiency and now plan to reduce our electricity consumption by 20 percent, based on 2012’s average use, by 2020.
Since 2015 we’ve had smart sub-meters, lighting and HVAC controls installed in all of our stores. Real-time monitoring helps us pinpoint areas for improvement, and having our stores’ lights off and HVACs turned down on holidays reduces our energy consumption. We also set a goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent per square meter of sales floor by 2020, compared to 2012.
